Rebecca Cole was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 16, 1846. She went to highschool at the Institution for Colored Youth, where she graduated in 1863. She went onto Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1867. She was the second woman to graduate from medical school. After graduating she interned at Elizabeth Blackwell’s New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. When she worked with the first white woman physician which was Elizabeth Blackwell they taught hygiene and childcare to poor families. After she moved to South Carolina, but then returned back to Pennsylvania and opened up a Women's Directory Center with Charlotte Abbey that provided medical and legal services to women and children.
